Created and written by BAFTA award winning screenwriter Guy Burt, Alex Rider is a teen hero series starring Otto Farrant as a teenage spy Alex who is hired by a subdivision of British intelligence MI6 for infiltration purposes.
The spy action thriller series is an adaptation of Anthony Horowitz’s series of spy novels on the same name just like Jack Ryan that is adapted from Tom Clancy’s book series. Two seasons of Alex Rider have been released so far while a third season in progress. Let’s dive into details.
Will there be Alex Rider 3?
Yes, there will be a season 3 of Alex Rider because Amazon has officially announced the renewal of the series along with the list of returning cast members. Some reports even suggesting that the filming for season 3 is ongoing in UK and Malta, and is expected to wrap around April 2023.
But that doesn’t mean we will be able to see the new season of the spy thriller series in 2023 because post production will also take time and that time ranges from a couple of months to a whole year but don’t worry, it will be back on our screens sometime in the future because the series isn’t cancelled like Hunters season 3 on Amazon.
When is Alex Rider season 3 coming out?
Season 1 was announced in May 2017 with Eleventh Hour Films as the production incharge, Andreas Prochaska and Christopher Smith as the director and Guy Burt as the showrunner.
In July 2018, Eleventh Hour revealed that they are teaming up with Sony Pictures to produce an 8-part episode adaptation of Horwitz’s Point Blanc book. Filming began in March 2019 in London and wrapped around Sep 2019 covering almost six months but season 1 took another eight months to premiere on 4 June 2020.
The series recieved a renewal in Nov 2020 but the filming began in Feb 2021 and finished after five months in June 2021 but the season 2 premiered after another five months on 3 Dec 2021. Season 3 began filming in October 2022, even before the official renewal announcement.
Since no official release date has been announced by Amazon Freevee yet, we can only wait as we are waiting for Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan Season 4 but we still have much information to speculate a potential release date.
Considering that the filming will wrap in March 2023, post production is going to take another 6-9 months, we can expect we can expect Alex Rider season 3 to be released around February 2024 on Amazon Freevee.
Which book will season 3 of Alex Rider be based on?
Alex Rider Season 3 will be based on “Scorpia”, the 5th book of the Alex Rider novel series. The book talks about an elusive criminal network Scorpia created by a group of ex-spies from all over the world to sabotage the US-British alliance. The group will also try to assassinate Alex but it is his duty to destroy the criminal organization and its roots.
Who’s in the cast of Alex Rider season 3?
Otto Farrant is confirmed to star as Alex Rider in the upcoming season of the series along with Stephen Dillane as DSO head Alan Blunt, Vicky McClure as Alex’s handler Mrs Jones, Ronkẹ Adékọluẹ́jọ́ as Alex’s legal guardian Jack Starbright, Marli Siu as hacker Kyra Vashenko-Chao, and Brenock O’Connor as Tom Harris.
Some new cast members that will be introduced in the third season are:
Sofia Helin will as Julia Rothman, a rich widow whose capabilities are unknown to the world and is leading a secret criminal gang Scorpia. She is one of the deadliest encounters of Alex Rider so it will be interesting to see her involvement with the teenage spy.
Jason Wong as Nile, a serial killer working for the evil syndicate leader Rothman. Kevin McNally as Max Grendel, a shrewd council member of Scorpia dressed up as an European gentleman.
Bridgerton’s Shelly Conn is also making her debut in Alex Rider season 3 as Laura Kellner. Her role is of a ruthless politician who stands up to challenge the Department of Special Operation’s Authority.
